Flat Stanley and Stella Adventures

Happy Travels with Flat Stanley and Stella!

As a part of our Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Mathematics programs, the students and I have read a funny book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished "as flat as a pancake" when a bulletin board falls on him while he is asleep. Stanley is very, very flat but otherwise fine. Stanley's family did not have enough money to send him on a train or plane to visit a friend in California, so they decided to send him through the mail. The story goes on to tell how Stanley discovers some real advantages of being flat. Our class has decided that we would like to do the same with our Flat Stanleys' and Stellas'. We are hoping our Stanleys' and Stellas' visit cities all over America and the World! 

On the address paper sent home, please provide at least on address of a friend or relative who is willing to participate.  The additional addresses are to share with other students who may not have an address to mail their Stanley or Stella to.

Office Gretchen Comes to Visit!

Officer Gretchen visited us today. We learned about safety  and that your power is your voice.We learned about not being a scaredy-cat and to tell someone when we see something bad. Officer Gretchen taught us to not touch anything that could start a fire, such as: matches, fire crackers, knives, guns, explosions, and dynamite. So don't be a tattle tale, be a reporter!

Science MATTERs!

Your child has been exploring matter by using the scientific method.  We started our investigation by using bubble solution.  We will be discussing the three properties of matter more in-depth for the next two weeks.  Here are some questions that you can ask your child about our science unit covering matter:

1. What is the scientific method? (question, hypothesis, observation, explain your observation by experimentation, conclusion)
2. What are the three properties of matter called that you are learning about?

3. Can you tell me anything interesting about these properties?

Congratulations Brendan!

Brendan traveled to BMCC last night with his family to compete in the Umatilla/Morrow ESD spelling competition.  He started his evening out with dinner at Denny's and topped it off with a special dessert from Dairy Queen.  He was one of the youngest competitors and did an amazing job!  We are proud of you Brendan!

April Fools

Rocky Heights staff thought they were going to have new furniture coming their way!  Mr. Wilson, the caring principal that he is, sent out an email on Monday informing teachers to write a "wish list" of the new furniture items that they would like in their room.  We had catalogs and everything to choose from.  So we quickly inspected all of our furniture putting in our special requests. This morning, we were informed that an email would be sent today naming the ten teachers who get a whole new classroom set of furniture.  The email was accompanied by an attachment that said "furniture list."  Once the attachment opened, it screamed out "APRIL FOOLS!"  As disappointment filled the air, the 3rd grade teachers didn't waste a minute to seek revenge.  We quickly turned in our "unsuitable" furniture into Mr. Wilson's office.
